Literacy is one of the most basic goals of education. By extension, improving literacy outcomes for youth is one of the most fundamental goals of education reform. Technology has made literacy both a more ubiquitous need and expanded the nature of literacy through the richness and prominence of visual media that it promotes. Electronic media are now a basic forum for expressing our literacy. We all need to be able to read and write using word-processing software and other tools. These tools hold the potential to help teach and learn to literacy (simplest example being word processors making revision easier).
