Beyond Imagination: Math for 4-Year-Olds

Four-year-olds may not be "doing" math, but they are thinking it in some surprising ways, according to CCT Director Shelley Pasnik. In "Imagining Math—4-Year-Old Style," on the Fred Rogers Center Blog, Pasnik considers how preschool children's mathematical thinking looks and sounds, especially when math learning involves new digital devices. Research indicates that children's social skills and emotional relationships are tied to some fairly sophisticated math concepts, such as subitizing and equipartitioning.
