A team of researchers from EDC, SRI, and WGBH has just published an article on teaching science to preschoolers in the October issue of the journal Science and Children, a publication of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The article, "Growing Plants and Minds," is written for preschool teachers and summarizes useful findings from a research project called Next Generation Preschool Science.
Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the project developed, tested, revised, and evaluated an innovative program for teaching key science practices and concepts to disadvantaged preschool children. The article describes innovative, free digital tools that were developed as part of the project, and describes how teachers can use them in the classroom, giving specific examples from real-life preschool observations.
NSTA members can access the article (and the entire October issue) online at http://www.nsta.org/publications/article.aspx?id=Yq3AJLav!plus!JY=
