CCT research scientist Dr. Peggy Clements has published an article in this month's issue of THE Journal on the study Access to Algebra I: The Effects of Online Mathematics for Grade 8 Students. The article, called "Eighth-Graders and Algebra: Making the Case for Online Education," summarizes the rigorous multi-year research conducted by the REL Northeast and Islands and the American Institutes for Research and Education Development Center.
The study found that an online algebra course offered to "algebra-ready" 8th-graders (who did not have access to regular in-school algebra classes) had positive effects on the students' success in mathematics and made them more likely to take advanced math in high school. Dr. Clements was co-PI of the study.
