This paper aims to introduce the reader to the current landscape of educational technology research and development by:

• Reviewing the recent history of research related to educational technology;
• Describeing the current key research themes and methods of the field; and
• Looking forward to some of the most promising future directions for the field.

Our emphasis is on outlining these issues and illustrating them through descriptions of exemplary work in relevant areas. In the appendices, we list sources of further information for the interested reader.
