Han-hua Chang, a community psychologist, has worked at CCT since 1994.
Currently he is working with the Hudson County Community College through a HSIAC project funded by the USHUD to provide an assessment of needs for educational programs for adult learners in Union City in conjunction with the Housing Authority of the City of Union City. In addition, he is working with the Exploratorium through the Live@The Exploratorium project funded by the NSF to evaluate a series of webcasts about the origins of life and the universe. He is also working with the Exploratorium to evaluate the introduction of a new website called "The Accidental Scientist" which is designed to introduce concepts of science through everyday activities.Han-hua’s previous project work includes, among others:
- The development of model uses of technology in after school settings in New York City public schools under a grant from The After School Corporation (2000).
- The evaluation of 54 educational technology projects in schools, CBOs, and youth-serving organizations around the country as part of the AOL Foundation’s Interactive Education Initiative (1999).
- Training teachers in the Union City, NJ, School District, recognized by President Clinton for its innovative use of technology in the context of curriculum reform, to use the World Wide Web for education (1996-98).
A report on a model course that used the creation of web pages to strengthen the social integration of Union City students with their local government agencies. He has also evaluated online educational projects (Washington State, NITI) and tested and deployed FOOTPRINTS, an Internet Survey Tool designed to systematically measure and interpret utilization behaviors, attitudes, and practices associated with educational networking (1995-96). Prior to CCT, he was a research associate at the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, NY. His work there involved calculating population attributable risks for substance abuse and matching these to codes for 70+ diseases to estimate the impact of substance abuse on national Medicaid hospital costs. Prior to CASA, he was a union organizer for Local 1199 for twelve years. When he left in 1987, he was a vice-president and the highest-ranking Asian American AFL-CIO trade unionist in the U.S.
His research interests include: social networks, social relations and health, community development, Asian-American mental health, science literacy, nonlinear dynamical systems, and virtual communities.
He has been married to his wife Irene, for thirty years. They have three children: Amy, William, and Beverly. In his spare time, he writes poetry, which may be read, seen (ASL representation), and heard on-line at: Han-hua’s Home Page.
