Green Fab Evaluation
2009 to 2011

GreenFab: Sustainable Design Through Engineering and Technology is the collaboration of Vision Education and Media, Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx), and New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) to provide a project-based, hands-on approach to teaching STEM concepts while emphasizing a focus on career development in the emergent field of sustainable technologies. CCT is providing research and evaluation support for this initiative. Although green technology is one of the fastest growing industries in America, studies have shown that there is an alarming lack qualified professionals in this field. GreenFab will address this imbalance through activities that increase participants' technological and engineering fluency while providing a community and framework for them to explore 'green collar' jobs. This three-year program consists of a series of after school semester length classes that will guide participating students through a variety of technology and engineering skill sets that include sustainable practices, industrial design and prototyping. Through these programs, students will explore how small-scale manufacturing can achieve environmentally innovative solutions to the community's needs. All modules will incorporate NETS Technology Standards, NSTA National Science Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills. Over the course of its three-year span, GreenFab will serve up to 160 students.
