Young people learn no matter where they are. Outside of school, organized but informal learning environments offer a huge range of programs. In recent years, these groups have come under more pressure to explain, document, and evaluate their offerings. Programs that once were purely recreational are now expected to be associated with learning outcomes. All kinds of programs are struggling to figure out what makes them different from school-and hence valuable-and what can be adjusted to put more focus on learning. The goal is to balance the originality and richness of various programs with added opportunities for constructive stimulation to learn.
