The Relationship Between Class Size and Academic Achievement

April 1, 2007

In August 2006, Regional Educational Laboratory for the Northeast and Islands (NEIREL) received a technical assistance request from the Commissioner, [then] Deputy Commissioner and the Director of Independent and Federal Programs for the Vermont Department of Education for information about the relationship between class size and academic achievement, with a particular focus on the impact of class size on the performance of low socioeconomic status students. In response to this request, NEIREL conducted this literature review, which briefly summarizes key research in this area. Please note that this is not an exhaustive summary.

This report has been submitted to IES for review. When available, it can be access from the Regional Educational Laboratory Program website.
